The David Lynch-directed film about a man suffering from severe facial deformities in 19th century London is very well photographed in black & white, but it is a little too slow-paced for my taste and the screenplay does not do that good a job at keeping the viewer interested in what happens next. Also: A mild case of what hencetoforth I'll call the
"Blimey, mate" phenomenon, both screenwriters and actors going over the top when trying to portrait working-class Englishmen. (6)
